The Indigenous Peoples International Centre for Policy and Education (Tebtebba)

The Indigenous Peoples International Centre for Policy and Education, normally referred to as Tebtebba Foundation, is an international NGO based in the Philippines with a desk in the UK. Tebtebba is working for the recognition and protection of indigenous peoples' rights, by building broad unities for social and environmental justice and sustainability. The focus of Tebtebba's work has been on strengthening the capacities of indigenous peoples' organisations to be effective in local-global processes:

  • economic, finance and trade policy (WTO and World Bank)
  • human rights (Commission on Human Rights bodies)
  • environment (CBD and IUCN policies)
  • traditional knowledge among others

Tebtebbas main programme areas are:

  1. Networking Advocacy and Campaigns
  2. Research, Education and Documentation
  3. Institution Building
  4. Publications (Indigenous perspectives, Tebtebba Magazine, policy and Briefing Papers, Special Publications)
  5. Gender Unit
  6. Resource Centre

SwedBio currently supports Tebtebba for the project "Indigenous Peoples Capacity-Building and Advocacy for Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)" during December 2004 to December 2006. The project supports capacity-building work with indigenous peoples' organisations to strengthen research, policy advocacy and education and provide a platform for more coherent and strategic in-puts primarily focusing on the CBD. The overall objective is:

"to deepen indigenous peoples' local-global understanding of the CBD Strategic Plan, Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPOW) as well as its cross-cutting and thematic work programmes: with a focus on enabling indigenous peoples participation in national implementation".
